I saw a case today of a woman with a 2 1/2 month old who had been
breastfed almost exclusively (avg 2 oz/day supplementation) until 8 days ago
when she had a copper IUD placed. Within 2 days her breasts went from often-
uncomfortably full to flacid and empty. Barely able to manually express drops
and baby angry and refusing the breast.
THere were no other dietary or life changes.
SPeaking with a colleague it seems that this happens sometimes. Has anyone
else seen this phenomenon recently with a copper IUD? Does the effect wear
off after a while? Or will she need to have the IUD removed to get her milk
supply back?
Any thoughts on what causes this response?
Any feedback would be appreciated.
