Dear wiseones
Several of the LC's at the hospital wher I work have been working on a
handout for moms on Tongue Thrusting and Suck Training. The following is a
quote which comes mostly from the Breastfeeding Answer Book.. We are
having some discusssion about this, and would like your input.

Position him at the breast so that his chin is slightly down. The
babyıs tongue may relax if the mother positions him at the breast so that
his chin is slightly down toward his chest. Swaddling the baby to pull his
shoulders and head forward toward his chest may help. Or, try positioning
the baby so that he is nursing sitting up, this may help keep him alert and
encourage his tongue to work properly.

I have frequently used this technique after seeing Kittie Franze demonstrate
it man;y years ago. Other LCs are of the opinion that babies canıt swallow
as well if their chin is down, claiming that it works better if their head
is tilted slightly back. Interestingly, we seem to be split 50/50 on this
and donıt know whether to keep this suggestion on the handout or not. Any
ideas or suggestions. What positions have you found that work besst?? We
would appreciate any input that anyone has to offer.
Thanks for your help,
Peg Merrill, B.S., IBCLC
