I agree with Dr. Jack that not much can be done about the doc or anyone
else with that mindset (i.e. you must supplement). What you can do is
focus on getting the parents well educated prenatally. Give alot of info
in your bf classes (Dr. Jack has a handout on how to tell if a hcp is bf
friendly), give info on how to tell if baby getting enough and no need
to supplement, give the info on no. of wets/poops and characteristics of
same. Like color of voids/stools. Also work with getting info out to the
media and responding to articles etc with letters to editor. All of this
will affect the consumers and as they are better informed, they will
question the poor advice and feel secure to not supplement.
You can also reach them prenatally by saying if you want a
recommendation of a bf friendly ped, contact me and I will give you a
referral. Somewhere there is a 10 step list I saw for the bf friendly
ped practice. Share this with the parents. Share the AAP statement and
say most peds that work at this hosp follow these guidelines, altho some
peds have not changed their practice to conform with this yet. I had a
similar situation where one ped. came to talk to childbirth class. The
things he recommended were so different from the mainstream, that when
he would leave the parents would all ask "What???" . They recognized
that his advice was very different. Sorry this is so long. Don't get too
upset over it. Try to help his pts as much as you can.
