Amy-

I feel your pain and frustration with the mentorship rules.  Part of the problem is the lack of IBCLCs willing or able to mentor.

I am very grateful to the two mentors I do have on my team at this time.  Unfortunately, the two combined still cannot give me the 500 hours of hands-on experience that I will need.   Meanwhile, I am feeling the pinch of impending deadlines and a MUST-qualify for the 2011 exam.  I have scrimped and saved and sold things on eBay to be able to pay for the online courses ("shout out" to Lactation Education Resources), books, babysitter, equipment and the exam.  I simply would not be able to afford two years of college-level classes and will have to give up my dream of becoming an IBCLC if I cannot find more mentors ASAP.

I will add that I love the mentoring model of learning and hope that it is not done away with in the future in favor of all-classroom learning.   I would, however, encourage anyone who is qualified to mentor, to please do so.
