One of the last talks I gave was to a group of Doctors about the advantages
of breastfeeding.  Part of my talk went something like this." I will try to
show to you that breastfeeding is part of the great circle of life,
Everything in life is connected,  to borrow something from Native American
theology. Believe it or not I can show you how breastfeeding issues are
connected with mothers, babies, the Disney Company, American Bison, the
Tobacco Industry, and the OJ Simpson trial."
I then proceeded to cover the gamut of advantages, otitis, SIDS, diarrhea,
malocculsion, diabetes, NEC(necrotizing enterocolitis), breast cancer, etc,
etc, etc.  I tied the above topics to BF by showing:
A Nestle chocolate bar featuring "The Lion King" and a Disney made toy "baby
Nala" that features a bottle for the lion cub. with the question is this
coincidence?
My daughter's Weekly reader magazine that featured Bison and the lesson:
Bison are mammals. A baby bison is a calf, it drinks milk from it's mother.
 Can you name other animals that drink milk from their mothers?  " I wonder
how many children in AMerica said in their class room, ' My mommy feeds my
baby brother/sister milk too'."
Several comparisons between infant formula industry and tobacco industry:
Multinational, both nonessential for humans, use of both products associated
with increased morbidity and mortality and others.
A "Mothers Day" front cover of the National Enquirer showing Nicole Simpson
in a bikini on the bed with one of her babies with a bottle propped in
his/her mouth.  TO illistrate the lack of research showing the relationship
of breastfeeding/bottlefeeding and child abuse neglect.  To my knowledge
there is only one published study that shows an effect of breastfeeding
decreasing abuse in the mother and child, and that study admits that the
sample size was small and more research needs to be done.

So I finish my 60 minute talk showing all these diverse things, and one of
the OB/GYN Drs comes up to me later and says:
"Dr. Ahrendsen, I think you made this talk very interesting, for such a SMALL
topic."

I shook his hand, smiled politely and said."Thank you." and privately said to
myself,
'You really still don't get it do you?'
