Hi all,

Thank you for all of your helpful posts on this scary case. I learn so much
each time I post to Lactnet, and this case was definitely no exception. I
wanted to give an update on the case now that I've spoken with the family a
few times since the consultation (if you can call it that) on Friday.

For those who asked about whether the midwife (CPM) or pediatrician had seen
the baby, the midwife was only phoned during this time. The couple had not
yet taken the baby to a pediatrician when I saw him on Friday, but the
midwife did a 24h exam.

After the couple were chewed out by the ER nurse and pushed back out the
door, they went home and phoned their chiropractor. The chiro brought over
a bili light to put on the baby but it was broken. He gave the baby an exam
but no tests, and said the baby was going to be okay with continued
supplementation. The parents said that they trusted the chiropractor's
evaluation because he was an MD before he became a chiropractor.

The couple said he started cuing to feed like clockwork, taking in about
1.5oz of formula per feeding as of Saturday night and is now taking 2-3oz
per feeding as of tonight (Tuesday). Baby is getting an appetizer and
dessert at the breast with the formula as the main course. His color was a
LOT better, according to dad, as of Saturday night, and "great" today,
according to mom. They took the baby to a "regular MD" today to get
circumcised uneventfully. Baby's weight today wearing a diaper and sleeper
was 7# 5oz, up from the 6# 1oz in diaper only on Friday. Baby is stooling
and wetting textbook-perfect now.

Mom has been pumping regularly but so far is only getting max .25-.5oz total
from both breasts. The scabs on her nipples are completely gone. She is
taking herbal galactogogues as directed on the label and is working on
getting a prescription. She is also taking ibuprofen for pain from her
birth trauma and stitches, so she doesn't cry out in pain with every
movement anymore. She has an appointment with her naturopath tomorrow to
get a thyroid work-up and I'm going to suggest she have her other hormones
checked as well.

Thanks again everyone for all your help. I'll continue helping this mom
until hopefully she makes enough milk to feed the little guy. He certainly
has earned it.
