We have the equivalent in the Contented Little Baby Book, by Gina
Ford, and it is causing great concern.

In the UK, because mothers and babies are seen often, and for free, I
think it is unlikely that there will be any fatalities from following
these types of schedules, because in an obvious emergency, someone
will make sure the baby is hospitalised/given formula....but there
are many, many women who are made to feel inadequate and whose bf is
totally messed up by it.

We have another person who is making waves, with a book and some
pieces of journalism, called Clare Byam-Cook. She has an article in
one of the popular Sunday tabloids today (in a magazine, if anyone in
the UK wants to check it out) which is full of inaccuracies and
misleading if not false statements. She is a midwife : (

I am totally sick and tired of it all, to be honest. There is no
reason for these people to ignore the wonderful body of research into
how breastfeeding works, and we have a great literature to support
baby-led breastfeeding. Trouble is (here, at least) too many women
are not helped to breastfeed effectively, and when it doesn't work,
breastfeeding is blamed for tiredness, soreness etc etc.

These others with their scheduling and strictures gallop in like the
cavalry to save the day, purporting to be on the mother's side. They
pander to the desperate exhaustion of mothers who are under so much
pressure, with their ideas that it is all so EASY as long as you do
what you're told....

Kathleen B - would it be possible for you to post the letter to the
mother who inspired your post? I would love to read it, and it would
help us all.
