I have been reading the discussion on formula use in premature infants
along with breast milk or breastfeedings. As an LC in a NICU I would
love to see all of our babies go home exclusively breastfeeding.
Unfortunately the studies show that the premature baby under 32 weeks
especially does not get adequate bone growth without some
supplementation after discharge. Head growth is also less than adequate
and can lead to neurological delays. Many studies state that the baby
needs to continue these supplements until they are consistently on the
growth chart and gaining steadily. At this time the common supplements
are made by the formula companies, but I would rather use these products
if they help the infant in the long run. The consistent use of breast
milk is still providing all its wonderful benefits and if a mother is
patient enough she will be able to exclusively breast feed at some point
as determined by her pediatrician. Premature infants on the older end of
the spectrum, above 34 weeks may do well on just breast milk but must be
watched for growth and blood levels of calcium and phosphorous to be
sure he gets everything he needs.
