What about those professional wet nurses who used to nurse one baby, then go
on to the next when the first one was weaned, and so on.  While various
cultures put restrictions on the characteristics of the wet nurse---e.g. had
to be brunette, to have given birth to a son, be healthy, her own baby had to
be within certain age limits---other cultures didn't seem to care as much.
And if her charges didn't thrive, she wouldn't have had any work!
