The baby I posted about started out 8 lbs. 13 oz. She was 7 lbs. 13 oz. on
day four when she went home with her mother. She has fluctuated in her
weight as low as 7 lbs. 9.5 oz up to 8 lbs. in my office one day when she
was about 14 days old. Currently she is 2 3/7 weeks old and weighs 7 lbs.
14.5 oz. She feeds 10-12 times a day and is being supplemented with her own
mother's milk after each feeding. She has very wet diapers (you can feel
the weight and there is no scent of ammonia ) six or more times a day and
3-4 dark golden stools. She is alert and vigorous now - - - she wasn't last
week. She has that faded lemon-colored jaundice which is an improvement
over the ruddy jaundice she had a week ago.

Mother said everything went well in the hospital (except for big weight
loss) and she was hopeful that the first child's pattern would not repeat.
She had full, leaking breasts at one week, but that is not so now. There
was some nipple soreness in the first week at home when the baby was nursing
most inefficiently. We worked together and corrected that, but swallowing
is not always audible even after the latch is improved. Milk is always
visible in her mouth when she comes off the breast.

The family's issue with their ped. is that the only treatment offered is
formula supplements. The lab work is used in a threatening manner in an
attempt to coerce them into giving formula.

Thanks to all who have offered their insights.
