I'm finding these posts on milk synthesis, storage capacity and ducts
really fascinating. The only comment I can make here is in regard to my
experience in the dairy industry. When a heifer (never had a calf yet)
was about to join the milking herd, most farmers I knew did not like to
see a large udder. They preferred a small compact udder, partly for
cleanliness and less risk of injury but mostly for milk production. Cows
were only milked twice daily and the cows with the huge udders didn't
seem as productive as the smaller uddered cows. The farmers' theory was
that there was more fat tissue in the larger udders and less milk
producing ability. It was amazing to see these cows with small udders
just keep chugging away and churning out 30 litres at a milking at peak
production. Can't say it did a lot for their longterm health, but that's
another story.
