What a situation! I feel for you. What I think I would do would be to go to
my immediate supervisor and ask for his/her support. You cannot be limited
to what you can teach/advise on by what each indiv. dr. says. Becoz you will
have dr. A that gives glucose water for jaundice, you will have dr. B who
does not allow the mom to take any meds while bf, or whatever. Your mgr has
to see you as the expert on bf and support you to the docs. Perhaps you can
suggest to your mgr that conflicting info is a problem, that you have this
booklet or these handouts on bf, and could all the docs start using them. I
would not in any way write an apologetic letter if I gave correct info. I
would apologize in person if I was rude or inappropriate in the way I
presented the info (like if I said your doctor is wrong or your doctor is
crazy) - heaven forbid. You have to be careful about that, but not about
giving the info. This is a sticky situation, becoz responding to crying is
really a parenting thing, not a medical thing in my opinion, and the parent
class may say something totally different than the dr. does too. You can
collect lots of articles written by docs, (check archives), the AAP policy
statment, Lawrence text etc. You can provide thrush info written by docs.
The one who does not beleive it exists you could say some people don't
believe hiv exists. I hope this was in some way helpful. Good luck. A letter
is fine, but don't cave in. I would resign before I would give in.
Laurie
