I decided to cut and paste.
This was submitted by Kathy Leeper MD. IBCLC. I found it in the archives by
putting
"castor oil" in the search box and putting 2006 in the date. (I want
updated material as much as possible, and
discovered that if I don't put in 2006 or 2005, I will get stuff dated back
to 94) I'm writing all this as
it seems many are not quite sure how to search the archives.
Oh! And as a side note, I have since learned that many massage therapist use
castor oil as it removes impurities.

- as per the archives:
"I do not know why castor oil works, or how...it just often does. A mom
willcall in with a plug, say she has been using heat before and massage while
expressing, but if she adds a castor oil moist pack it often does the trick
within 12 hours.

Directions: Apply castor oil to a warm, moist washcloth folded to size to
cover area involved. place something plastic (like saran wrap) and a
heating pad on low over that....let sit about 20 mins before nursing or
pumping. Then nurse or pump while massaging area. Repeat every 2-3
hours before feeds.""

I looked back at the archives as well. It is really too bad that so few folks are willing to use holistic
therapies as they are suggested over and over again and yet seem new every time they come up.
There are many references to castor oil in the archives and I posted in 2000 about using castor oil
to treat mastitis and an abscess. It is the first line of defense I use along with homeopathy for plugged
ducts or any other inflammation of the breast. I have not had one single client who has used castor oil
packs and homeopathy require an abx. I do not, however, use castor oil w/o the homeopathic remedy
b/c the remedy gives such immediate relief and sometimes the packs require several applications.
Castor oil is a catalyst for lymphatic drainage and is one of the very best remedies in a holistic toolbox.
I never use saran wrap or a heating pad and while castor oil works fabulously heated. it works well at
room temp as well. What I do is heat the pack in a microwave oven and then allow to cool to touch--
apply and cover with a towel. Leave on for at least 20 minutes--I prefer overnight. You can also use
castor oil to deliver herbs transdermally and I sometimes have mom add herbs to packs, especially
when using them for tummy aches. If you want to understand why and how it works, read the original
works of Edgar Cayce on castor oil--he was brilliant and its uses are amazing!
