Hi Lactenetters,
Dianne writes about hospital grade pumps and if they are different from Pump
In Style..the hospital grade pump is designed for several years use with
multiple users. The others are designed for one mother for working hours, for about
her two babies. Smaller, cheaper motors.
Hospital grade pumps also differ in that although they may reach as high a
vacuum peak, they do not sustain it as well, and as smoothly, and thus do not
provide as high of a prolactin and oxytocin surge to then stimulate a sustained
long term milk supply.
There is an older study that had some interesting demonstrations of this
effect, although the Pump in style wasn't there, it is easy to see that it can be
put in the smaller pump category, not the hospital grade type. email me
directly for that ref, and I'll dig it up. It's too late for me right now to think
of it.
