Dear Friends:
Jan asks about pumping and nipple shields.
If the shield is part of the care plan in the early postpartum (while
supply is being established and set for the future), I ask mom to pump 140
minutes a day. If there is a good feed, then she can skip that pumping session.
If the shield is part of the care plan after the lactogenesis III period,
then pumping may vary, on an individual basis. From not at all, for a mother
with a sufficient supply and a baby that latches and gains. Infant weight gain
would be monitored weekly to make sure all is well.
    warmly,
