Perhaps the Biblical injunction to circumcise boys (if one is
ethnically, socially, religiously or

medically so inclined) on the eighth day of life, happens to give him
enough to get practice in breastfeeding and be able to be soothed.   It
is a shame that in this case  the baby now equates the breast with pain.
I have always thought that day 1, as mothers now go home so soon is too
early.

It used to be day 3 when insurance paid for a 3-day stay.  It was always
just before she signed out, unless the historical guidelines were
adhered to.
