Stacy and family are back in their home in Hatteras, without water and
electricity from a generator. She walked down to the Salvation Army feeding site for
lunch with Hunter in his sling, wrapped in mosquito netting ( she can't use
the stroller with all the sand and debris on the roads). A friendly
distribution center volunteer offered her some disposable diapers and hand sanitizer
which Stacy was very happy with because she can't easily use and wash her cloth
diapers. She then offered Stacy formula. Stacy responded by saying that she is
breastfeeding and how great it is that she is since there has been no
systematic water supply and bottles would be too dangerous to use right now for any
mother ( thinking she could throw in some education). The woman then said to
take it anyway because they had a truckload donated. Stacy said no thanks one
more time. She said that it was amazing that there are only 3 babies on the
island, all breastfed and the Red Cross or someone had transported in a truckload
of formula, over an emergency ferry, on which they could have brought
something the islanders could have really used instead of useless formula. The same
situation happened during Hurricane Floyd. We had truck loads of powdered
forumla donated. Many people at that time traded in the formula at the big discount
store for other items.
The mosquitoes are terrible all over Eastern NC but Hunter still is fine and
actually seems to be enjoying the activity!
