Mixed feeds (e.g. baby gets some of each regardless of whether at
the same time or not) can change gut permeability. One outcome that
has been suggested is that this is the way HIV in human milk may get
to baby. When there is absolutely NOTHING but breastmilk going into
baby, the gut lining is much less permeable to foreign substance.

The main reason I give for not mixing the two is that if you have
half an ounce of EBM combined with half an ounce of forumla and baby
takes in less than that total ounce, you wind up having to throw
away some of mom's valuable EBM. When supplementing is truly
justified, mom should first give whatever EBM is available and then
only the amount of foumula needed to "finish" the feeding. The
problem can be that some babies have a more "refined palate" may
object to the taste of formula after mom's milk (and who can blame
them-the smell of formula alone makes me gag). In these cases, if
baby must take some formula, mom may need to mix the two so baby
won't reject the formula.

Winnie
