To Jan, it is my experience in working with hundreds of mothers who have
worked while breastfeeding, I get constant reports from moms who say that
their babies take more by bottle than by breast, they feel. This would be
easy to test out, with each baby being their own standard. This is a
factor, I feel, that contributes to many mothers quitting breastfeeding.
The mom feels that she has less and less (as she pumps less and less
frequently during her busy day) and sees her baby taking more and more by
bottle. I suspect that there are caregivers who use bottles and feeding to
calm babies in lieu of other techniques....and a baby who is upset and who
is offered a bottle and then takes it cannot help but take milk in...hence
large feedings. This often begins a downward spiral in both supply and
confidence.

As for Barbara Wilson Clay's comments, I agree. It's all about power.
