Yes, I DO see normal - thank Heavens - as my job is to teach Public Health
Nurses about normal - but when they refer a mom for a Lactation Assessment -
then out comes the big scale. I don't expect the PHNs to do LC work - but I
do teach them breastfeeding assistance and normal breastfeeding situations.
Some become interested in going futher - and then they, also, use the "big"
scale - otherwise it is referred to me or my colleague who is also an IBCLC
and an RD for WIC.

In addition, my support group is of "normal" - La Leche League - and I do NO
test weighing there! Moms have their own health care professinals - and
often have met with our local Lactation Consultant in a private
consultation. I do not want to interfere with that relationship. If the
mother is low income and coming to the LLL meeting, I may arrange to meet
her later on - but not during the meetings - for a Lactation Assessment WITH
the scale. My "hat" there is NOT of the LC, but as a Leader (no longer a
peer - more like a grandma!) - and the scale use at that time would be
inappropriate.

Jeanette wrote about using test weighing and said she does not use this with
everyone. Well, I do and I personally think test weighing is very very
important. It often "cuts to the chase" on what the problem is and saves
much time trying to assess what is going on. With the right scale, one that
measures down to 2 grams accuracy. Now, I don't help "normal" situations,
only crisis and problem situations. And I want to know, really need to know,
what intake baby has had in order to make a care plan. So, perhaps if I saw
normal, I would say the same as Jeanette.
