Thank you, Norma. You took the words right out of my mouth! I
wonder, too, what happened to the petition?

Subject: Basel petition?

In the latest JHL there is a Letter to the Editor by Diana Powell, RN, RM,
IBCLC which mentions the VELB and ILCA Conference in Basel, Switzerland,
which took place in September 2010.
Diana talks about a petition that was circulated at that conference, calling
for only those with a health care background to be allowed to be IBCLC. I
have looked in the Lactnet archives but was unable to find reference to it,
and I do not remember even hearing it mentioned before. (It is possible I
was temporarily too busy to read Lactnet at that time.) Can anyone share any
information or background about this petition?

Like Diana, I am astounded that such a thing ever came into being. One has
only to *look around* Lactnet to see the value of encouraging candidates
from a wide variety of backgrounds to become IBCLCs.
