Haven't seen any other Aussies report on the ALCA conference yet. It was
wonderful! Our speakers notes are coming by snail mail, but include a CD
ROM - I'm really looking forward to receiving mine.

Our very own Barbara Wilson-Clay was a key note speaker. It was great to
meet her in person. For those who haven't heard her speak yet do make the
effort when she is next in your neck of the woods - she speaks particularly
well, and always has interesting insights to share. Thank you Barbara.

Peter Hartmann shared his research on ultasound and thermal imaging of the
breast during milk ejection. He's also studied the Medela Classic (a pump
we, ironically don't have in Australia) and found it obtained as much milk
in 5 minutes as the baby did in 15 minutes of suckling - interesting. At
one point though he did say that some breasts don't produce milk for
expressing at all, but feed a baby beautifully - I didn't follow up on that
comment and would like to.

Lars Hanson's work is also fascinating - I'll need to read my notes
thoroughly though before I start trying to share his info. He's such a
lovley man too - he won a breast pump as a lucky door prize and was soooo
excited. He's taking it to Pakistan I think to give it to breastfeeding
supporters there. He couldnt' have been happier if he'd won a trip to the
moon.

There were numerous other good speakers - altogether it was an excellent
conference.

Oh - and I passed my 10 year recertification - maybe that was why it seemed
so good. We 'recertificants' at the conference were told early because all
the 10 year plus IBCLCs got to wear a lovely gold ribbon with IBCLC on it.
I wore mine very proudly.
