I once had a Mom who, when she found it difficult to get her baby to burp, was told by the nurse that that must mean she didn't have enough milk. Never occurred to her that since there is no air in the breast, the baby might not need to burp.

The same weekend, that nurse told another Mom to supplement "just in case" she didn't have enough milk. A third woman was told that her baby, who had latched fine for me despite a slightly short frenulum, must not like her milk when he had problems latching on later in the day.

As you can guess, all three women quit. I am well known for being generally quite patient and diplomatic, but this was just too much. When confronted, this nurse became very defensive, and said what we've all heard many times "Well, I bottle-fed my kids and they turned out fine."

I have since learned to say "Well, my in-laws and my parents let their kids ride on the shelf behind the back seat of the car, and thought I was odd for insisting on using a car seat back in 1977. Their kids all turned out OK. Does that mean car seats don't really matter?"
