Well Lactnetters, I am one sad LC right now...

You may recall, my brother's 11-week old baby began having terrible green
diahrrea one week ago today. The baby became dehydrated and has been
hospitalized for 7 days.

The diagnosis came in and I just got off the phone with my brother and sis in
law. The baby has a severe allergy to protein. The villi in the duodendum is
extremely smooth and flat, therefor not allowing the baby to handle the
proteins entering. The hospital team has advised my brother and his wife
that the baby will now be unable to breastfeed. They will be giving him a new
formula called "Elcare" which they say has been pretty successful in babies
with this problem. (Has ANYONE ever heard of that formula? I sure haven't).

So, after a good cry, I told my sis in law how to dry up her milk. But as a
last ditch effort, I thought maybe someone could give me a miracle here, and
any new advice which would be contrary to weaning my nephew.

THANKS everyone who responded to my first post on this subject!

Gratefully yours,
Brenda Phipps, BS, IBCLC
