I'm new to this, so hope this works right.  I'm a Lactation  
educator.  I went to Target to check what kinds of nipples they have  
for sale.  I was really disappointed!  They had Avent nipples, and  
some sort of generic copy of Avent.  The Avent nipple works OK for  
some babies, but it is quite firm and long, and some babies gag on it  
unless they suck just on the tip (real great for a baby trying to mix  
bottle and breastfeeding.)  They also had a playtex nipple that  
looked OK (wide base and slow flow), but it requires a special  
bottle, and that system is more expensive than the "ordinary" playtex  
nurser with the skinny nipple.  I saw one from The First Years,  
advertised as great for "training" (I think parents would interpret  
that as better for breastfeeding), but the baby could only possibly  
latch onto the VERY skinny nipple part of it.  All of the other  
nipples were quite skinny and quite inappropriate to try to mix with  
breastfeeding, in my opinion.  I used to recommend the evenflo elite  
(or elite ultra), which was very soft, not too long, and had a pretty  
wide base.  But I can't find them any more.

That First Years nipple really got to me, as the advertising makes it  
look like it would be best for breastfeeding, while it is tailor made  
to cause maximum problems with breastfeeding.  Wonder who is behind  
this.  It seems like it's getting a lot harder to find nipples that  
are less problematic for breastfeeding.

Of course I would prefer not to deal with artificial nipples at all,  
but in real life I must.  Leslie Keenan
