<<I've also noticed the babies of these moms often have a very hungry
day or two before the milk comes in, with lots of crying. These factors
have made it a challenge for me as LC to preserve exclusivity of
breastfeeding, because with sore nipples and a baby that acts hungry all
the time, many families ask for a supplement. >>

I also just recently dealt with a very hungry baby until moms milk came
in (nursing well, but *screaming* after coming off breast) and am very
interested in hearing general comments on how this is handled in various
places.

In this case, we initially had the mom pumping b/c
1) baby couldn't latch onto mom's very firm "implant like" breasts
(though she had no implants)....he was so patient and kept trying but
didn't latch at all for 8/9h and didn't nurse *well* until 19h. her
nipples were also quite flat, but I didn't mention that b/c the pump was
pulling them out and there was no point is adding info that at that
point was already being dealt with.

2)baby was obviously hungry for food w/in 12h so we spoonfed the
colostrum that mom was able to pump.

i'll finish the story later....kids are calling.

:)
