Does the mom have dermatographia?  I only ask because *I* have it and it really sucks!  Didn't develop until after my twins weaned thankfully.  The thing that makes me wonder is the husband giving her a shoulder massage setting it off . . . when mine is acting up, I can bump something, rub against something, get too hard of a handshake and it will give me hives along the pressure points.

I know some docs do a protocol of Claritin (Loratidine) and Pepcid (OTC GERD med).  For some people with dermatographia it can flare if seasonal allergies are acting up, if they have been on an antibiotic recently, or even an anti-fungal.  In my case, we haven't 100% pinned down what sets it off other than season changes (spring to summer and summer to fall are the worst).  It does take some investigation, diet tracking, med tracking etc.  

Just my thoughts . . . a dermatologist may well be worth talking to for this mom!!
