Fiona: are you referring to the kind of cleaning substance I saw in South
Africa and New Zealand and Australia that is sold as a cleansing agent, but
which has been implicated in rampant thrush? (I can't recall the name).

The chemical disinfectant mentioned by one of NMAA's Medical Advisers was
'Milton'. This is commonly used in Australia as a disinfecting solution
for nursing equipment, as an alternative to boiling. The implication with
thrush rings a bell, but I'm not sure if it was ever proven. As the Adviser
pointed out, the equipment being sterilised still has to be cleaned
scrupulously before sterilising, and this may be the weak link in the chain
with respect to getting rid of Hep B, HIV etc.
If anyone has a reference associating these sorts of solutions with thrush,
I'd be very interested to know about them.
