One of the representatives from a large formula company scheduled an
inservice without my knowledge and when I came in, I found the notice on
the bulletin board. I went to the inservice and watched the video which
was produced by Briggs and Yaffe of the Drugs in Pregnancy and Lactation
fame. I found a lot of inaccuracies in the video, particularly when
metoclopramide was mentioned twice as contraindicated, birth control pills
were okayed without qualification of what type, and then it went off
subject and stated that many babies are readmitted to the hospital while
breastfeeding with dehydration, and the numbers are going up on this. It
also stated that if baby did not have many bms by day 3, and begin
increasing wetting a lot, I forget the numbers but it was a lot, that there
was a problem. Has anyone else seen this video? What do you think? This
is the first of a series of videos to increase the knowledge of nursing
staff, according to the representative. It also came with a folder
containing a mail in rebate,( already expired) for a $10 rebate on breast
pump sale or rental, nutritional comparisons between breast milk, cows milk
and the two major formula companies milk, facts about their product that
you need to know, graphs with calcium content, absorption rate, and
absorption percentages between breast milk and the two major formulas, and a
very small paperback Drugs in Lactation with an ordering information in the
back to order the Drugs in Pregnancy and Lactation book. There was also a
quiz which could be completed and mailed back in to get CEU credit for
participating, one hour credit. The folder cover states that it is approved
for contact hour credit by the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric,
and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN). In smaller letters it says AWHONN contact
hour approval refers to recognition of educational activities only and does
not imply approval, accreditation, or endorsement of any product or service
of the company, including certification in any nursing practice area or
skill. This is part of the FORMULA FOR SUCCESS SERIES, Dedicated to
Excellence in Nursing. (hey, don't shoot the messenger!) Comments from
anyone who has viewed this?
