I have seen the info in Dr Hale's book on Depakote/Depakene :

Lactation risk is L2 (safer)
Pediatric concerns: None reported via milk.  
Watch infant for changes in liver enzymes, clinical status, and platelet 
levels. 
"Most authors agree that the amount of valproic acid transferring to the 
infant via milk is low.  Breastfeeding would appear safe.  However the infant 
should be closely monitored for liver and platelet level changes."  
No alternatives are listed.  The peak (time to peak plasma level) is 1-4 
hours.  

I need to give this mom of a one month old nursling reassurance that this 
drug is safe for her to take ( 250 mg twice a day - total 500 mg) while nursing.  
Does anyone have any experience with this drug (used for epileptic seisures) 
? She is concerned about the liver aspects.
