Kathleen,
I have two clients whose unimmunized children contracted pertussis. One has
had asthma ever since. Both were exclusively bf and were extremely ill.
Their younger siblings were subsequently immunized.
I find that much of the anti-immunization material in the magazines is
unscientific. That's not to say that there are no contraindications or
dangers to immunization, but in general it is a small personal risk for a
large public health benefit. Here in NYC where 35 or more of our children are
packed into classrooms that were built for 15, and many children have
emmigrated from third world countries, I felt it prudent to immunize. I do
have concerns about exposing infants to foreign proteins in the first 6 months
of life, though, and felt that IgG from me (intrauterine transfer) would
protect them that long. What do my learned colleagues have to say about these
2 issues?
