Hi Lynn,
I think at least part of the answer to your question is that the majority of
women living in the United States think they NEED every gadget ever made. That
is what we are supposed to believe, and that is why companies employ
marketing and research people/firms.

I often counsel mothers of the benefits of hand expression.
I often counsel mothers that they are buying too much pump. (i.e., you really
do not need this $200+ pump for occasional separations). I think that
ultimately, they know they don't NEED it, they just WANT it. And many times they want
the most expensive model. (kind of like a status symbol... I paid more for
mine, so it must be better, attitude.)

I have also had WIC clients tell me that they won't breastfeed if WIC doesn't
give them a pump. I personally find this dynamic very interesting. Is it that
obvious to the mother that I am more invested in her breastfeeding
relationship than she is? Does she really expect that I will feel coerced or maybe
blackmailed by this statement?

I believe that the US is just a very greedy society, and except for a few
"radical" holdouts, our citizens just want, want, want.

Why do
Americans always assume that every problem has a technical solution? Any
other hand-expressing members out there who care to join me?
