Hi all...
I understand that the antibiotic trts for group b strep are probably not
contraindicated with breastfeeding, but what about the increased risk for
thrush? Stating the obvious, perhaps but would there be a way to head off
thrush problems before the birth if a mom goes through a course of antbios.
for grp B strep? Have any of you seen thrush cases in grp B strep carriers, or
increased rates of thrush?
LCs in my area tell me they are seeing more thrush, I think there is also
more awareness of grp B strep. There was a sad case last yr involving a baby's
death from strep that certainly raised awareness around here.
Regarding thrush - I'm really curious how much thrush you experienced
LCs see. Is it discussed in hospital with moms who've had antibiotics (for
strep, c/s, anything) as something to look out for? I would consider mentioning
it with moms, but I'm not an IBCLC (yet) and also don't like to fall into the
pattern of discussing breastfeeding in terms of what can go *wrong* instead of
encouraging it. On the other hand thrush can be devastating to a bf
relationship and it can be hard to get support from doctors for trt (personal
experience here) and if it can be caught early, before going systemic I think
quite a few bf relationships could be saved.
 Thanks!
