Dear Friends:

When babies are left skin to skin, or in close contact with their mothers,
they may breastfeed up to 20 times in the first 24 hours. I believe this
figure came from Chele Marmet who posted about a trip she took to
Japan....PLEASE someone correct me if I have misquoted or mis-identified the
source of the quote that was published on LACTNET years ago.

When newborns are not with their mothers 24/7, they will not breastfeed
enough. When they are double-wrapped in blankets, and plugged with
pacifiers, their hands are tied, their mouths are silenced, and they can not
show feeding cues. If they get to breastfeed 8 times in 24 hours in the
hospital, under those conditions, we can celebrate a miracle!!

Babies are supposed to be in close contact with their mothers all the time
after birth. Any drop in feeding frequency is the product of the
non-evidenced base practice that passes for "normal" in US hospitals.
Remember that "common" does NOT mean normal.

warmly,

Nikki Lee RN, BSN, Mother of 2, MS, IBCLC, CCE, CIMI
