Cannot resist adding .01 to this discussion.  As for where HIV came from,
etc.  there is now pretty convincing evidence that there are two kinds:
HIV-1 and HIV-2 AND,,,

that the original vector is the Chimpanzee on the African continent.  One
of these causes AIDS (HIV-1); the other apparently does not (at least in
the Chimp).

It is possible that this virus has been in existence many many many years
and only recently has been identified in humans in a deadly form.

We continue to learn new things about this virus and its sequelae every
day.  Never accept as final whatever you read about it--good, bad,
indifferent, from professional journals or magazines for the public.  No
one, least of all writers, has the final word on this topic.
