I am troubled by the term "relief bottle" because it seems to suggest that breastfeeding is a chore rather than a pleasure. When we talk about "relief bottles" we perpetuate this negative image. This is tied in with my confusion about why some fathers insist that that they can only bond with their baby by giving it a bottle. Presuming that this "bonding-by-feeding" is a pleasurable experience for fathers, why suggest that is otherwise for mothers? It is sad that our culture sees childraising in general (and breastfeeding in particular) as something to be hurried through as quickly as possible so that we can get on with "real" life.
