I just wanted to clarify a few things. In the interest of brevity, I didn't
give the whole picture of the mom and baby I posted about. This baby had no
other problems that could be found. Her doctor felt she just wasn't getting
enough to eat. I spoke with the doctor and told her my plan including the
galactogogues and she had no problem with it. Only the NP, and because of
her the dietician, had a problem with it. I suggested the mom continue
pumping, which she had been, but on a more regular schedule. However, this
mom was exhausted and stressed out, so I suggested she needed to get some
rest also. Hard to juggle those two. We also used the supplementer. To be
honest , I suggested the galactogogues, which I haven't done often, because
they seemed appropriate for this mom's situation but also because, in the
words of a former co-worker who spent 19 years in the ER, "Can't hurt, might
help, and it's a helluva crowd pleaser!" (That was the reasoning behind a
lot of things done in the ER apparently!) I wasn't convinced it would help,
but didn't feel it would hurt from the information I have. At any rate
something did help as she is doing better. Thanks for the references I've
gotten so far. Please feel free to offer more.
Warmly,
Marsha Glass RN, IBCLC (who is getting sick of snow in the Hoosier state,
Chritsmas or no Christmas!)
