I cannot say I like any one particular bottle. I like different types for
different purposes. I have come to agree with Dee's idea that the wide base is
not that important, and that accepting the nipple beyond the gums is more
important. However, occasionally I find a baby who needs both. I like Playtex
Natural Latch for those babies who are breastfeeding great and mom needs to
offer a bottle for another reason, but for those babies having a hard time at
the breast because of a tongue issue it is not firm enough. I have seen
babies push that nipple right into the base and chew even when their lips looked
flanged on the base. Haha. You could see them change their cheeks and hear
the clicking and when you move the base you see them chomping away on the
nipple. Those babies need something that reminds them the tongue is not for
pushing out a nipple. I don't think we really can pick one bottle over another as
easily as we can say which ones are definitely not great for breastfeeding
babies. I tend to watch as new ones are coming all the time, old ones are
changing and no longer what they used to be, and each baby I work with may need
a different bottle depending on the reason mom is choosing bottles for the
alternative method of feeding. Things I look for are the rate of flow, the
amount of sucking pressure needed to create a flow and how long the nipple is
when placed on the tongue.

I would like to see a bottle that responds to vacuum and compression and
lets out milk similar to the breast, but also allows non nutritive sucking that
does not reward with milk but allows the baby to self pace the feeding as they
can on the breast. Ideally all babies are breastfeeding, but some cannot
or have not been doing so and need to make a transition. For them I like to
work on finding the perfect bottle that fits the individual baby. Like many
things, it is not one size fits all.

Take care,
