I have been a certified LC since 1996, but functioned on the floor basically
as a "breastfeeding specialist" for 10 years before that. I have personally
cup-fed hundreds of babies and taught to many parents. As long as you let
baby "set the pace" and use cup-feeding (like all alternative feeding
methods), as a transition to the breast and not as a replacement, we have
never seen "choking" , "cup-preference", or any other problems with this
method. We have however seen and worked with had to combat a "nipple and/or
flow preference" when babies have been given bottles. I believe it is the
tactile feel of the vinyl and/or latex nipple as opposed to skin that is a
basic problem. I've seen more babies choke from the fast-flow of a hospital
(double-hole) nipple than from cup-feeding.
