i am finding a little about hydrolyzed vs elemental formulas by searching
google and reading about the various products. of course you have to wade
thru the marketing hype.
dr. leeper i think recently posted to lactnet that the only true 'elemental
formula' is neocate which is basic amino acids. it is made by SHS company i
think. never heard of them?
the hydrolyzed formulas are 'partially' broken down casein but still some of
the intact protein would be there. Apparently pregestimil, nutramigen, and
alimentum are all hyrdolyzed formulas made by competing companies; I liken
it to Similac vs Enfamil. Below are some of the info from the websites I
visited:

Enfalac Nutramigen is a hypoallergenic formula that contains extensively
hydrolyzed or broken down protein (casein) for the treatment and prevention
of allergies in high-risk infants, or that provides relief of colic in
infants. Cow's milk allergy occurs infrequently (in only 0.3% to 7.5% of
infants). A family history of any allergy increases infant risk of food
allergy. An infant with one allergic parent has over 50% risk of being
allergic. An infant with two allergic parents has 67% to 100% risk of being
allergic.

Pregestimil infant formula is rarely used without a doctor's recommendation.
It provides the same extensively predigested protein as Nutramigen, but it
differs from Nutramigen in its source of fat. The fat blend in Pregestimil
consists mostly of a special type of fat called "MCT oil," which is more
easily digested and absorbed than the close-to-breast milk fat blend in
Enfamil, LactoFree, Nutramigen and ProSobee. (MCT oil is a "medium chain
triglyceride oil.")

What is Neocate Infant Formula?
Neocate is a complete elemental formula, based on a unique formulation of
amino acids (the building blocks of protein), similar to breast milk.
Infants that have allergic reactions to cow milk protein, soy protein, or
protein hydrolysates (which still contain small amounts of intact proteins)
may benefit from Neocate because it doesn’t contain any intact proteins,
only 100% free amino acids.

Why should Neocate be used only under medical supervision?
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified Neocate as an Exempt
Infant Formula: Such formulas typically are prescribed by a physician, and
must be requested from a pharmacist, or are distributed directly to
institutions such as hospitals, clinics, and State or Federal agencies.
Such formulas are also generally represented and labeled solely to provide
dietary management for specific diseases or conditions that are clinically
serious or life-threatening and generally required for prolonged periods of
time.
