Hello everyone,

I thought I'd just introduce myself formally. I've been a lurker on Lactnet
for about two weeks now, reading all the postings and gaining lots of
helpful info.

My name is Cathie Wilson, most of you probably read Kathy Dettwyler's
posting on my behalf regarding benefits of breastfeeding for infants with
FAS. (Kathy, thanks for doing that by the way.) I received some very good
responses.

I am a mom of two beautiful children (Genevieve - 7 & Benjamin - 5, a Doula,
co-teach Prenatal Classes, and work as an Outreach Worker @ The Family Place
in the little town of Port Hardy, BC. I work primarily with young,
overburdened moms & couples - prenatal support, preparation for delivery,
even during delivery, and of course postpartum.

In the last 4 years I have seen Breastfeeding support in Port Hardy increase
dramatically. Seven years ago, I did not find very much BrF support when I
had my daughter. As a result I ended up quitting when she was 5 months -
after my best efforts. I was wracked with guilt and disappointment that my
body couldn't do this biological function. So, needless to say, the next
time around I was a little more prepared. Maybe it was by luck, but Ben
just seemed to get it right from the start. Then I joined LLL about 10
months later and with the support of my wonderful friend & now
co-leader(then lone LLL Leader) Kim Kohan, BrF Ben until he was 3 years old.

I have just finished the application process of becoming an LLL Leader (just
have to sign on the line), needless to say, after what LLL has given me, I
hope that by becoming a leader myself I can extend support and experience of
the many women that BrF in generations past, to new moms.

I am also taking a course to become a Breastfeeding Counsellor (through
Douglas College in British Columbia, Canada), with the hope of 1)becoming a
Lactation Consultant and as soon a School of Midwifery comes to British
Columbia 2)become a midwife.

So, there it is. Now that I have tapped into a wonderful wealth of
collective BrF knowledge, I hope you won't mind if I pick your brains once
in a while.

I hope everyone is enjoying Spring. Up here, although we are midway up the
BC coast the weather seems to be confused and as I type this message,
crocuses are blooming, birds are chirping, and snow is falling.

Happy reading,
Cathie Wilson

P.S.
