Is anyone familiar with this study that Dr. Spock ran in Cleveland in the
'60's at Case Western Reserve? According to his biographer in "Dr.
Spock" by Thomas Maier, the study showed that "many women do not
breastfeed their children because they didn't have the support of their
nurses, pediatricians andobstetricians. With the encourgaement of Spock's
staff, nearly all the mothers wound up breastfeeding their newborns for
at least the first two months-a radically high percentage for the late
'50's and '60's when most babies were bottle-fed."

Pearl Shifer, IBCLC
NYC
but born in Cleveland (before the study!)
