I think this is one of the most frustrating aspects of this job. WE
realize how important breastfeeding is and it can be hard to
understand why others don't feel as passionate about it. No one
approach works for everyone, and there will always be some that no
matter how well you word a response, it is perceived as an attack!
I try to take an approach like, "What you are doing (whether it's
pumping and bottling, supplementing, weaning or whatever) is
certainly one option and it may well be the right one for you right
now. No decision has to be etched in stone. Here are some things
you may want to consider, if you haven't already, in making a final
decision." If, for example, she has decided to pump and bottle, I
might go on..."Some moms do pump and feed baby their milk from a
bottle. It is wonderful that these babies are getting that great
mom's milk indirectly if directly isn't working for them. It
certainly is far better for baby than formula. Other moms find that
whatever the challenge was initially, that with a little patience
and problem solving, they can get baby back to nursing directly. It
certainly takes less time in the long run. How is the pumping
going? Do you have any questions or concerns about it at this
time?" This way I have left the door open while at the same time,
hopefully, not alienating the mom entirely because I may feel she is
making a poor choice. Depending on her next response, I might go
into how to get baby back to breast or I may just give more
information about pumping.

Of course, this assumes all is going peacefully with whatever else I
have on my plate at that time! Many is the time when I think of a
wonderful, empathetic response right after I have put my foot in my
mouth!!!

Winnie
