I agree that breastfeeding can help a mother feel empowered. However,
that doesn't necessarily mean she will be comfortable if she feels
exposed, nor should she have to worry about her shyness. I can empathize
with mothers who feel apologetic about feeling apologetic!
Introverted mothers can enjoy a happy breastfeeding relationship, too,
and perhaps they should leave the speaking out against unfairness and
even the confident looks to those who feel confident. Invite a mother
who wonders how to breastfeed discreetly to a support group and ask the
other mothers where they feel comfortable nursing in their community,
and you will get lots of ideas. Few of them will be restrooms (although
the old smoking lounges have been turned into some awfully comfy places)
but, without fail, some of them will be places the others haven't
thought of ... including some humorous ones!
Slings, blankets, clothing also accomodate a mother's comfort level.
