Annette,

I had a similar case--mom returning to F/T employment--baby gaining
well at breast (very rapid--oversupply red flag), but would not take a
bottle. He did not seem to have any idea as to what to do with it. He
would not suck on a finger either. We did several things that finally
worked, but it took many weeks (was 9 weeks when I met mom). First, the
baby was tongue-tied and was getting plenty to eat because mom had an
oversupply--he fed very passively, never efficiently. Tongue was
clipped. Baby had a lot of CST--he needed a lot, as does just about any
baby with tongue-tie, IMO--especially the older ones, b/c there have
been so many compensations integrated into the system. Finally, mom
used a pacifier to teach baby to hold onto it (the CST had allowed him
to relax his gag reflex and allow a finger in his mouth). We tried many
different bottles and he finally took the same bottle as the pacifier
shape--the Mam.

We had the ped look once more at baby's tongue--there is a bit of the
anchoring left, but mom decided not to have it clipped and that just
knowing this is the underlying casue is something she can work with.
Bottom line--it was always the togue-tie, and still is, but she is now
compensating along with the baby. I know that Cathy Genna has said this
before--but a reminder--the tongue-tie needs to be clipped all the
way--it is very misleading when it is clipped only part of the way and
mom thinks that the tongue-tie is out of the equation and there is
either no improvement, less then expected or things actually get worse.

Subject: disorganized tongue on bottle

I have permission to post this from a mom in our support group. This is

mom's 2nd baby. First baby breastfed and took a bottle very well. Mom
works full

time. Second baby is now 11 weeks old and is having a hard time with
the

bottle. She places around with the nipple in her mouth. Her tongue is
all over

the

place. She does not do this when breastfeeding. Mom will be returning
to

work soon. Dad will be watching baby. The baby does seem to swallow
some of the

milk. Mom has tried 5 different nipples. Any thoughts or ideas on this
one?

Thanks,

Annette Leibovitz
