Hello. A while back I posted about implementing skin to skin at my hospital. I
just wanted to give you an update. During my presentation about sts at a
staff meeting I encouraged the nurses to try sts whenever possible and not to
worry about making it routine yet. They were concerned about the extra time
it might take. I hoped if they tried it on their own time that maybe they would
see positive results and realize they can't do without it!

I have noticed over the past several months that more and more sts is taking
place at our hospital. Some of the nurses have gone from just mentioning it to
actually undressing baby and informing mom they need to do some sts. Even
some dads are trying it out. Even for myself it has become more routine and I
am seeing the benefits first hand. It is really great when I ask a mom if she
has been told about sts and she replies, "Oh yeah, his temp was low so the
nurse had me do sts and it worked really well!"

Just today a nurse told me about a baby she delivered that had apgar of 1.
Baby continued to grunt and nurse was concerned. Mom was requesting to
hold baby. The nurse said she could if she did sts. Mom was happy to do so
and the nurse stated to me, "It was so cool, the baby stopped grunting and
was doing fine!" Later dad wanted to hold baby and the nurse said he could if
he took his shirt off and did sts. He happily whipped his shirt off and got to
hold his son for the first time!" Usually, baby would have been taken to the
nursery-but this baby never left the room!

I just wanted to write some encouraging words about our progress. I don't
post to lactnet often, but I do read posts all of the time. All of the wisdom
and encouragement has really helped. I am by myself in a small town so it is
not always easy to be a one person team and try to make changes. Thanks
and take care.
