Hi Everyone,

Is it ever possible to freeze breast milk that has been fortified?
For example:
Medically complex hospitalized infant
Mother provides fresh milk
Milk is fortified with fortification agent (prolacta, liquid protein fortifier, neosure, or other fortification product)
Infant is made NPO before prepared fortified feeding can be given
Fortified feeding remains in the refrigerator, but will be considered expired (and need to be discarded) 24 hours after fortifier is added.

Is there any research to support whether the feeding in the example above can safely be frozen for use when the infant is able to be fed again?

Thanks,

Barb Fibich, RN, IBCLC
