Jennifer makes an excellent point:
"I do not consider pumps/bags, etc to be "breastfeeding supplies". I
consider them pumping supplies. There are so few women anymore who
think that a pump is not essential to breastfeeding and I think we
may well perpetuate this myth ourselves. While it is more likely
that mothers who see us may have use for pump supplies or other
equipment than other moms, I still think we might want to reconsider
our terminology here."

It is wonderful that pumps are available and constantly being
improved for those moms who have a real need for them. However, it
has become just as pervasive to assume every breastfeeding mom needs
a pump (and a fancy, elaborate one at that) as it to assume that
every breastfeeding mom will need formula at some point. It would
drive me crazy to be talking to a new mom who intends to stay home
with her baby, nurse at least a year, etc. who proudly announces
that she has bought (or got as a gift) a Pump in Style or Purely
Yours. Talk about overkill! I would rather see a stay-at-home mom
in particular learn hand expression or if she feels she will need to
pump on occasion not to look any fatrther thas a good manual pump
instead of feeling she needs the "Cadillac" of pumps!

Winnie
