Natalie wrote about the changes she has seen in her psychologist husband
and his business partner as they learned to respond to the needs of their
children.
I can guarantee that had I become a mother 15, 10, or even 5 years earlier,
I would not have done many of the things that I now value and find
effective. I am continually amazed (you'd think I'd have learned by now!)
that when I get to an age at which I thought people must finally "have it
together," I still find myself and others as human as ever! I have no doubt
that in 10 years I will look back and ponder the many things I did not know
even as I am writing this email. Enlightenment is an ongoing process for
me. It is for everyone. Human development doesn't stop at eighteen.
Parenting is a developmental stage and task. While my own mistakes continue
to exasperate me (as well as others!), the fact that human beings are so
capable of learning and growing gives me great hope. Change is possible.
Cultural change is possible. They happen all the time. All the more reason
to be patient with each other, share knowledge and learn together. Everyone
knows something worthwhile and everyone has more to learn.
