Same subject, change of focus... The discussion of what to do if a
Vietnamese woman asked for formula for her newborn came up at the ALCA
conference. (it was a concurrent session and not what the talk was about).
The speaker felt that the mother's wish should be followed and that really
we didn't have a right to tell her otherwise - 'interfering with customs'.

An interesting and lively discussion followed. ;-)

Lars Hanson joined the conversation - his focus was on the importance of
the immune system, right from the beginning, and how important EXCLUSIVE
breastfeeding is and another audience member mentioned the large number of
Baby Friendly hospitals now in Vietnam and how those mothers, with the
right information and education, are very happy to only offer their babies
colostrum.

What have others experienced, particularly with women who are living away
from their 'primary' cultural influence?

Denise
